Why are humans so afraid of making mistakes?

Humans say that mistakes are how they learn.

They tell children this quite often.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

Then their mistakes are counted.

Interesting.

MOST MISTAKES AREN’T DRAMATIC

A wrong answer.
A failed attempt.
An opinion that doesn’t hold up.

AND YET…

Humans can go to great lengths to avoid saying:

I was wrong.

Why?

Perhaps “I got this wrong” starts to feel like “There is something wrong with me.”

Those are not the same thing.
